The Return Of Joey
So like , I ran into Joey , my big dicked tweeker friend , the one who had moved to Palm Springs trying to find himself, looking for a change , but only wound up finding more of the same shit , only it was happening in a much older age bracket. But anyway, I ran into him on Market street, as I was waiting for a ride, which is hard to do on Market street because no matter what you do , it's impossible not to look like a hooker. Joey was walking with my ex boyfriend, Drew, from Oakland, I was a little surprised. Mostly because , I didn't know they knew each other and also because, after Drew and I ran screaming from each other, it has been near impossible for me to trust anybody since. That's not really his fault but , I am still holding it against him.
And I was in such a good mood before my ride was late. Being late to pick up a friend who is waiting on market street is like leaving someone to die in the desert, a desert where every few seconds a person , you don't want to see comes walking by with somebody else you don't want to see, smiling and enjoying life. Fuck that. It's bad enough I look like a hooker.
Joey and Drew come walking up and say "hey" in unison , and then smile , turn to the other and in unison say "Huh, what did you say?" then they laugh , in unison , and skip away like two Japanese school girl assassins. All I can say to that is , fire your choreographer.
My confusion is all I can focus on because, just a few days ago, I got a call from Stanley, who lives in Joeys building in Palm Springs. He called to tell me , he and Joey were coming to San Francisco for a memorial service for our mutual friend Tommy, who had recently died from a surprise brain tumor. Stanley informed me , they didn't have any money for gas , since they had spent it all on dope and cigarettes, but, they were putting their faith in the powers that be and fate, that they would somehow make it. Classic tweeker.
Armed with all the dope and cigarettes they had invested in, and their tenuous grasp on reality Joey and Stanley jumped in Stanley's car and threw themselves to the hands of fate, knowing they would be smiled upon and allowed to make the trek north , somehow. And, it seemed everything was going great and that fate was indeed smiling upon them , until somewhere outside of Livermore , fate took a lunch break and our two travelers ran out of gas.
The next call I received was Stanley begging me to send them 20 dollars for gas because Joey had resorted to shoplifting to get his hands on super glue to repair the plate on his dentures and, for concealer to use on various parts of his body. there is a reason Joey doesn't go out before 4 pm. As ridiculous as it was , it was also very sad. I sent them the 20 dollars in the hopes Joey wouldn't die running from security at a Wal- Mart deep in the heart of Livermore.
So, I'm confused because , when they got to town , Stanley called again to tell me he had lost Joey when they stopped to get a doughnut and he had hoped I had heard from him. I said no, and then I smiled to myself because, unbeknownst to Stanley, Joey was not coming back, and I felt good knowing some things never change.
But what about Drew and Joey? to be continued.
